Afua Boahene, Board Member

As first-generation American, Afua Boahene was raised to believe that “To whom much is given much is required.” Born the second oldest of three children to immigrant parents from the Caribbean and West Africa, Afua considers herself to be a social justice advocate and public intellectual. As an educator with ten years of experience in both secondary and higher education institutions, she has held positions as a K-5 school teacher, a student affairs administrator, and as a teaching assistant. Currently, she is a doctoral student in Cultural Foundations of Education at Syracuse University and an adjunct professor in the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies and the School of Education.
Her research interests focus primarily on intersectionality of identity for young and professional women of color, social justice education, critical pedagogy, cultural studies, popular culture, identity, and representational practices. She has a flair for developing social justice curriculum and possesses significant experience in advising and coaching students for leadership, teaching and facilitation, and community advocacy/outreach. She has co-authored two journal articles in Critical Studies <=> Cultural Methodologies on women of color experiencing anger and the limits of practicing libratory pedagogy in the classroom.
She was featured in Imagining America’s Web Series “The New Activists: Students in the Community” for her role as an Executive Board Member with the Image Initiative, a non-profit that serves middle and high school girls in the City of Syracuse.
Afua holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in History with a minor in Secondary Education from Wells College in Aurora, NY, a Master’s of Science degree in Cultural Foundations and a C.A.S. (Certificate of Advanced Study) in Women and Gender Studies from Syracuse University.
