Afua Boahene, Board Member

Most aptly described as an educator "whose work reflects her heart", Afua Boahene has 15 years of professional experience working with students at the K-12 and collegiate level. In the course of her tenure as an educator, she has held positions as an elementary school teacher, student affairs administrator, graduate and teaching assistant, high school facilitator, and academic coach. Currently, she serves as the Associate Director of College Access & Success at Rochester Prep High School in Rochester, New York where she counsels high school juniors on their college process. Before that, she held the role of Behavioral Support Specialist at Rochester Prep High School from 2016-2017. Prior to coming to Rochester Prep High School, she was a graduate assistant for the Intergroup Dialogue Program at Syracuse University where she coordinated recruitment efforts for dialogue courses, delivered workshops and presentations, collaborated with an English teacher on a high school-university partnership, and created a campus wide dialogue conversation series.

Through her various roles and positions she has gained significant expertise in advising/coaching students, teaching and facilitating, developing curriculum, and community advocacy/outreach. To date, she has co-authored two articles which are published in the research journal Critical Studies <=> Cultural Methodologies. Ever a seasoned presenter, Afua has numerous public appearances to her name. She has presented at both A Dream Deffered Conference and the American Educational Research Association Conference, served as a panelist for the 14th Annual Activism Symposium at her alma mater Wells College, facilitated workshops for the Literacy Corps Program at Syracuse University, the SYNERGY program of Mercy Works Inc., and two forums for the local chapter of the Student National Medical Association at Upstate Medical University, all in Syracuse, New York.

Her media credits include a supporting actress role in a student film titled "The Past Held Within," appearances on the web series Real Talk, a feature in the Imagining America web series The New Activists: Students in the Community, and on the newscast Weekend Today in Central New York. Afua has a Bachelors of Arts degree in History with a minor in Secondary Education from Wells College, a Masters of Science degree in Education, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Women and Gender Studies, both from Syracuse University.
